Glass abutment systems, also referred to as ZX 27, is a prosthetic construction developed as a result of cooperation of German and Hungarian technologists. This solution has revolutionized prosthodontics, allowing for reconstruction of the missing teeth in patients with contraindications for implantology procedures, including patients with hyperthyroidism, diabetics (with non-compensated diabetes) as well as heavy smokers. In the last group, smoking causes drying of the oral mucosa, which may result in inflammatory reactions and even rejection of the implant.
As early as the treatment planning stage, so-called visualization of glass abutment location is prepared. For this purpose, impressions are taken and gypsum models fabricated. The location for the glass abutment point is determined on the basis of detailed intraoral examination and analysis of gypsum models.
The proper prosthetic reconstruction process consists of two stages. First, a precise impression is obtained and the abutment teeth are tapered. Then, glass abutment and bridge construction is produced by the prosthetic laboratory. During the next dental appointment, the construction is fitted on the patient’s teeth and occlusion checked, which is followed by mounting of the whole prosthesis with special dental cement.
The only contraindication for glass abutment construction may be the shape of the toothless alveolar process, that is. If it is atrophic, or its edge is too sharp, glass abutment should not be localized there. This is extremely important because the glass abutment together with the whole bridge span works on the bony background and incorrect positioning may lead to discomfort, or even pain experienced by the patient.
We have been using glass abutment constructions for eight years, receiving during all that time very positive feedback from our patients, who can enjoy permanent dental prostheses owing to this technique.
